CANON HISTORY: Here! For some reason the history section on this page is missing Fairy Tail Gaiden: Rhodonite, which is a canonical spinoff covering some off-screen Gajeel-centric stuff from the manga, and in which Levy plays a pretty decent part in.
CANON PERSONALITY:
CANON PERSONALITY:
In a guild full of vibrant and strange personalities, Levy McGarden holds her own. She isn't as Obviously Strange as certain people (Natsu and Gray and the other heavy hitters have everyone beat) but she's as casually quirky as any other member of Fairy Tail. Upon her very first introduction it's made clear that Levy and her team, Shadow Gear (consisting of herself and her friends, Jet and Droy), cause just as many problems for the guild as other members do in terms of needless destruction to property. They do not, of course, even begin to approach the trouble Natsu causes, as the fire dragon slayer is in a class all his own when it comes to needless destruction. Levy's brand of quirky seems to be entirely book-related. Her room in the Fairy Hills dormitory is absolutely covered in books, looking like a rather cluttered library, and she frequently can be found ignoring events with a book in her hands and was even the only person to read the rulebook for the guild battles in later arcs simply because It Was A Book, and so she read it.SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Thanks in part to being raised in Fairy Tail from a young age, Levy doesn't shock easy about odd appearances or abilities or personalities. Instead she seems to take those things in stride, focusing on other aspects she hasn't been overexposed to in her time with the guild. While people's actions do of course still surprise her, she is very accepting of other people's differences and seems to even enjoy them. She never really joins in on guild brawls (not everyone in the guild does) but always tends to watch them with good-natured amusement more than anything else.
While she can be competitive like any member of Fairy Tail, Levy usually has a good grasp on her own abilities and cheerfully admits to others being stronger than her when they are. She's quick to say Erza is the strongest woman in Fairy Tail, for example, although no one would contest that and many would say she's the strongest overall. She also displays no interest in the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, when Laxus sets up a contest (with hostages) to discover the strongest person in Fairy Tail, clearly not happy with the idea of fighting her comrades. She's also the first to put aside the mage trials in the S-rank arc, immediately realizing the guild had to pull together to defeat Grimoire Heart. Still, Levy is at least a little competitive - up to that point she'd done her best in the trials, up to and including breaking out of a rune trap set by Freed but only getting herself and her partner out and not the other guildmates trapped in it.
Despite usually having a good grasp on her own abilities, Levy sometimes undersells herself or worries about her skills in comparison to the flashier members of Fairy Tail. While her initial reaction to being chosen for the S-Rank mage trials is joy, she quickly becomes worried, stating that she's small and doesn't have many redeeming features and therefore might lose quickly. This fear doesn't seem to last too long, however, as Levy is very good at snapping herself out of funks - and she had a little help breaking out of that one. More anime/manga trope-wise, she definitely compares herself to other girls in terms of looks and tends to think she's too childish looking (she is very short, so) and can be moved to tears when it comes to such comparisons. Still, these moments aren't as frequent as they might be if she lacked confidence and Fairy Tail's easy support; by the time she's mid mage trials, Levy is doing her hardest to compete against the others without letting herself worry about how strong she is or isn't in comparison.
Levy doesn't frequently lose her head in a crisis, but she absolutely can let her emotions get the better of her. During an argument with Gajeel in the mage trials arc she runs off after her feelings are hurt, although as soon as she's attacked afterwards and realizes the entire guild is in danger she shelves the hurt feelings to focus on the matter at hand. Much later on she also frantically forgets she can simply use Solid Script to give a guildmate air when they're drowning and goes in for the more trope-laden underwater kiss to give them some before being reminded about her skills. While she typically manages to remain calm in tense situations or at least thinks things through logically, it is simply worth noting this isn't always the case - she's a teenage girl and does have feelings that do get the best of her sometimes.
On the whole, Levy is very upbeat and cheerful. During her first meeting with Lucy she's energetic and eager, talking about the novel she heard Lucy was writing and asking if she could read it when it was done - even extracting a promise through sheer enthusiasm that when Lucy finished writing, Levy would be the first reader. Despite it only being their first meeting she speaks to Lucy very familiarly, calling her by a nickname and immediately jumping headfirst into friendship rather than bothering with any small talk. She only infrequently seems to get down about anything, and prefers to look on the bright side even in dire situations - perhaps not surprising in any child raised in the chaotic cheerfulness that Fairy Tail best displays. Despite being cheerful and capital-N Nice, Levy does have a teasing and troublemaking streak, understated though it is. She'll tease Erza about the romance novels the other girl borrows from her, for example (which is dangerous) and has been known to tease Lucy and Juvia about boys they might or might not like.
Despite this lowkey penchant for teasing, Levy is a very kind person. As soon as she's able to walk after the Phantom Lord incident (where team Shadow Gear was crucified to a tree to start a war with Fairy Tail) she's quick to tell the others not to worry, and that nothing is their fault. Lucy in particular had been worried she was at fault and Levy was the first to reassure her this was not so, even if Makarov took up the conversation soon after. While it would have been easy for Levy to bear a grudge against Gajeel - the perpetrator of the Phantom Lord fiasco - Levy does no such thing but pretends she's fine with him joining Fairy Tail, going so far as to ask Jet and Droy not to attack him when they try. Levy accepts Gajeel more quickly than anyone would have a right to expect her to do, even allowing him to accompany her as her partner to the mage trials and relying upon him as she would any teammate in that arc, admitting to herself she thought he'd become a better person.
While she does not exactly shy from fights, Levy doesn't usually seek them out the way some of her friends do without cause. She knows when she should grit her teeth and take something, for any reason. When Laxus taunts Shadow Gear for the Phantom Lord incident, for example, Levy simply takes it quietly without saying a word as he is a guild member and they do care for him, personality at the start of the series aside. She also repeatedly claims she isn't bothered by Gajeel joining Fairy Tail, not wishing to go against Makarov's words and determined not to cause trouble for anyone. However, it is also clear that Levy will not cut and run from a fight when one happens. This is clear throughout her actions in the series, even in smaller asides - once, for example, it's made clear that her two teammates lost consciousness during a job and Levy had to complete it on her own, and did so without issue.
Though she admits many times to being afraid and to admiring the courage of others, Levy is not without courage herself. She is simply very realistic about her own skills and she doesn't usually hide the fact she's afraid, instead stating it openly and then acting despite that fact. She's willing to take dangerous jobs, like pretty much everyone in the guild, but she is also willing to throw herself into fights between Fairy Tail's hardest hitters in order to deliver messages and beg them to stop fighting to focus on more important matters at hand. While she has gone on record as finding these people intimidating - Laxus and Gajeel in particular, though she never finds Natsu intimidating despite his strength - Levy doesn't think twice about interfering and asking the three to stop and come back to the guild. She also never shies away from hard work, even if she has stated herself to be small and weak. She pitches in and does her part always without fail, even when the work is hard or taxing on her abilities.
Levy's biggest strength lies in her intelligence. She's extremely quick about putting clues together and making connections, and she has a wide knowledge base that frequently comes in handy throughout the series. She's often one of the first or the first to come to certain conclusions, too. She recognizes very quickly that Gajeel wasn't fighting Jet and Droy back when they attacked him after he joined Fairy Tail, and correctly infers it is because he wanted to treat them like guildmates. Levy usually functions a voice of reason to calm others down. For example, she immediately tells Natsu to chill out when he's fighting against the age enchantment keeping him in the guild in the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, and assures him she can probably break the enchantment as it is a form of written magic. She's also not bad at thinking tactically, making certain at one point the dragon slayers know they need to split up or they're all doomed during a certain battle.
She's also a very trusting person in general, and very loyal. Like most members of Fairy Tail, Levy easily places her trust in the members of her guild. She time and again states that she believes in the others and their strength, and never wants to do less for them than they do for her. She pours everything she has into getting the dragon slayers out of the guild during the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, knowing they'll help stop the Lightning Gods from destroying the guild they all love so much. No matter how down to the wire things get, she believes that her friends can pull through and gives herself pep talks that this is so, and it never seems to be a front but rather her genuine beliefs. Levy's trust in the others goes so far that when one of them goes missing and seems to have gone rogue she refuses to believe in the story and insists that she will simply go and track the person down herself and ask him directly what's going on - even if she has to do so alone.
To sum up: Levy is a cheerful, upbeat, kind girl who is mad intelligent and loyal to her bones. She has moments of insecurity and is occasionally too emotional, but works past those and can always be relied upon when it comes down to the wire.
Levy utilizes a form of magic known as Solid Script. To put it very simply, she writes words in the air and they become real - for example, using Fire will allow her to send out a blaze of flame. The word Hole, however, can cause a pitfall trap on the ground - or, applied in an alternate fashion, can be used to drain water from a battlefield through the hole in the "O". The word Iron materializes as pure iron, which she has before thrown to a guildmate who needs to eat iron to power his magic. Her magic is fairly versatile, and she's even been shown to use it as a luminous trail of markings in order to leave a path for herself or others to follow at a later time - or a mask to keep herself from breathing in pollutants. Or even as a bridge. Most of Levy's ability lies in her creativity to apply Solid Script words to any situation, although not all of them seem immediately useful (Butterfly, for instance, just conjures up a bunch of butterflies, so). How effective she is in battle or other situations depends on her own ingenuity and vocabulary.
She does have a magic limit like any other mage, and it was originally of the Average level rather than the insane reserves that, say, Erza or the dragon slayers seem to work off of. I say was Average because like most of the other "main" characters, Levy went through Second Origin Release, however, and can last longer in a fight/power up her abilities, or release it as a trump card in a fight. As enemies in manga tend to scale with level, however, this puts her just about at fighting level with their general enemies, it doesn't raise her to mythic levels. Additionally, Levy was one of the candidates chosen for the S-Class Promotion Exam and is an accomplished mage in her own right - she's just not one of the Protagonists (she's, like, secondary-tier level so she still has a Lot of shit, just not like, wow time for a tragic backstory shit).
Non-magically Levy is a polyglot who can translate many ancient scripts very quickly; she reads a lot and is very intelligent, and can rewrite enchantments done in magical runes or the like, such as those done by Freed Justice. It takes her only a minute to rewrite on of his spells at one point. She's also extremely good at infiltration and has worked multiple missions requiring those skills from her (once she posed as a child to take down an evil mage; she hated it because she is not a child even if she is Short???) up to and including the cult organization Avatar.
On the magical items side of things for potential future purchases, there are a few small things of note! Levy has Gale-Force Reading Glasses (model 18x) which allow her to read books/anything at 18 times the usual human rate and her Light Pen, which lets her write in midair/on things that you usually don't write on. She typically uses the light pen for informational diagrams or to rewrite magical runes and symbols.
Additionally, she bears the fairy tail guild mark on her left shoulder blade in white. While a guild mark is applied magically it doesn't always have magical abilities - the Fairy Tail guild mark does enable the members of the guild to see the spirit of Mavis Vermillion, the First guild master, for a good portion of the manga until Shit Goes Down and the First isn't a ghost any longer, however. It otherwise does nothing special that we know of.

AU HISTORY:
I talked about everything involving other players with said players, disclaimer!AU PERSONALITY:
• One of those originally-from-Japan people, although her father was American so there's that.
• Her father died before she and her mother moved to Recollé , so it's her and her mother basically! However, she does have two cousins in Recollé - Baren and his sister.
• Her family only moved to Recollé when she was 14, so she's lived in the city for 5 years. For the record, she didn't meet her cousins until she moved.
• Once they moved to Recollé her mother started up the Comic Corner, a comic shop that sells comics (obviously) as well as trading cards/collectibles, games, and some ordinary books. Basically any geeky paraphernalia you might want.
• Levy is Extremely into books of all kinds and will read pretty much Anything given the chance. There is no genre she is not willing to sit through, and she probably religiously reviews anything she reads on goodreads.
• Accordingly she varies between terrible and great at her job; while she can help you with recommendations and finding books easily, she's super distractable by all the, you know, books.
• Comic books are, after all, a kind of book and she reads them voraciously. She's one of those people who can't even stop herself reading tabloid magazines in the grocery market waiting line. Words exist, she has to read them??
• Levy is also mad knowledgeable about all kinds of trading card games and cheerfully and completely without embarrassment plays several. She's actually pretty good at trading card games?
• Levy is also really into Dungeons & Dragons (And the new world-change knockoff is neat?) and fantasy gaming of that variety. She is more than happy to insert herself into a gaming group for that? She wouldn't mind playing DM but also just playing, so.
• She likes video games as long as they have lots of plot/lore and/or are puzzlers, and is handy at solving puzzles or figuring out plot connections but less great at like, shooters. She'll try if you invite her to some fighting tournament, but also, she will lose?
• She's studying linguistics at the university but takes a bunch of other random courses for "fun". Maybe could stand to like do that a little less, though??
• Generally upbeat and pretty friendly. She can have a jokey side but is generally a Good Bean in a way my others are not since she's nice and doesn't make a fuss about it. Can sometimes go puffy-cheeked in anger though when not taken seriously.
• Tragically never hit a growth spurt, ever, and does not break five feet to her Eternal Dismay. Please do not lean on her?
• Constantly spends 80% of her free funds not going towards,
like, important need to live stuff on books. Save her she doesn't haev room for all these books.
• Currently lives in an apartment with Kyouko Kirigiri, her ~best friend forever~ whom she adores. She's friendly with a lot of other people, as well.
Not having been raised in a guild full of troublemakers and rulebreakers, Levy is much more by-the-book than she was in canon! She tends to follow rules and doesn't make a habit of thinking outside of them too much. She can be creative still, but she tends to not draw on that and would prefer to abide by the law and not cause trouble for her mother or anyone else. This is very opposed to the usual outlook of anyone from Fairy Tail, which is "whatever gets the job done, who cares about property damage". Levy cares, now. Levy cares about the property damage, okay. Similarly, she's a little less roll-with-it about people being excessively offbeat, although she's still pretty easygoing.
In a world without magic, however, there are more differences than simply this. Magic was something Levy loved dearly and relied upon a great deal, and it was something that made her more confident in herself and her abilities. Though she was small and physically weak at the start of the series, she trained hard and her magic was versatile and allowed her to be more than a damsel in distress. She is therefore somewhat less self-confident in her ability to defend herself and go about her life at times, although she's usually pretty even-tempered. Still, she's both less likely to take a fight when it comes her way and less likely to be able to handle the fight if she can't talk her way out of it.
Without Fairy Tail Levy also loses the thing to which she was most loyal and loved best in the world. That lack is filled instead with friends and family, books and schoolwork. While she is no less loyal Levy spends less time thinking about laying down her life for anyone and anything in that category because it simply usually isn't a concern. Her life has been much more peaceful than it was canonically and her already soft nature is a little softer because of it.
